WB 15.03.21

Wow, what a busy week in Elm Class! We've all continued to settle back into life at school and have had a fun week's learning across the curriculum. We ended the week supporting 'Red Nose Day' by wearing something red to school!

In Maths, the Year 1 children have been recapping on their addition and subtraction skills, and finished the week by blowing Mrs Biggs's socks off with their own word problems. They really enjoyed reading their problems out to the rest of the class, and the rest of the class loved solving them! The Year 2 children have been working on reading scales, and had lots of fun using the water tray to measure out different amounts.

In Literacy, we have had a wonderful time reading and enjoying the story of 'The Naughty Bus' by Jan Oke. This week's Literacy homework contains a link to the story being read online, if you want to share it at home! We have spent time talking about rules for the Naughty Bus to follow while he is in school, and then wrote these rules down using conjunctions like 'and', 'but', 'because' and 'so' in our sentences. In the later part of the week, the Year 1 children drew story maps to sequence the story, while the Year 2s wrote sentences using time words like 'First', 'Next' and 'Later on' to explain what the Naughty Bus had been up to!

In the afternoons, we have started our DT unit of work, which is called 'Wheels and Axles'. The children have been exploring lots of different toy vehicles (including the Naughty Bus!) and have been sorting them according to whether they have a fixed axle or a free axle to turn the wheels. Once we had a good understanding of what an axle was, we teamed up in Year 1/ Year 2 pairs to design our own vehicles, which we will be making next week!

Well done to everyone for their hard work this week, and we will see you again on Monday!
