FIR CLASS' WEBPAGE!

Week beginning 3rd July 2017

This week we learnt about the artist Andy Goldsworthy. We started by researching the artist on the iPads and discovered that he likes to use natural resources within his art such as leaves, flowers and thorns.

We decided to have a go at creating our own interpretations of his artwork.

Week beginning 19th June 2017

Our week has centred around the Disney classic Beauty and the beast, as we have worked hard both practising and performing for the Summer production.

In Literacy, we looked at the emotions of character's  within the story and worked has a group to complete an emotion chart.

We then used these to create frieze frames of key points in the story and discussed how each of the characters would be feeling.

Week beginning 5th June 2017

Together we stand!

Today we have talked about our experiences and thoughts about recent weeks. What do we think or believe? How do we feel about it? What would you do if?

The common theme across the whole class was a passion to stand up for what we feel is right! Here are some of our posters of support.

The Great Debate!

This week our Scarecrows came in to school. We have worked extremely hard on these either individually or as part of a team.

Unfortunately, the birds have begun to nest before the scarecrows could do their job. This has led to a great debate in Fir Class. There are many reasons for and against. See our pictures and us debating our ideas.

What have my words done?

We have been learning about friendships and relationships this week. We have talked about people saying or doing nasty things and the affects of this.

We had two apples. The first apple we said lovely things to. Compliments and positives. The second apple we said horrible things to. We insulted it repeatedly. Then afterwards we felt bad and said sorry.

We opened up the apples to see the damage we had caused. We were shocked that our words could hurt it so much.

It made us think... what have my words done?

Week beginning 24th April 2017

Starry Night

We have been looking at Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh. We have looked at the style of working and the effect he has created. We have then attempted to mimic the style and skills in preparation for our Manea Gala pictures.

We started learning about direct and reported speech this week in literacy. All of us didn't really have a clue about what it was. As the days went by, we learnt more and more about direct speech. Just ask us how we got on with our homework this week!

See the examples below:

"Why did you do that?" the man questioned.

The man questioned the reason for their actions.

"Come on, you can do better than that!" She said.

The lady reported, that they could do better.

Our stories

We have worked well this week to complete our short story books. We have planned our stories and written them. We designed and made our books. Here are some pictures of what we have been doing.

The end of the first half of the autumn term!

Our thoughts of our time in year five so far...

In Fir Class, we've been very interested in computing.

Those of us who went on the residential had a great time.

Each Monday and Tuesday morning, we have got on well with P.E.

With lots of practise, we have performed our harvest assembly successfully, which we are all proud of.

We have enjoyed our art because we have used mark-making skills.

In the afternoons, we enjoyed doing observational drawing.

For our harvest pictures, we were enthusiastic about using charcoal to add effects by smudging.

Our favourite part of this half term was mindful time, hockey, tag rugby, after school clubs and drawing time for planning story writing.

Week beginning 17th October 2016

Emailing Miss B!

This term we have been developing our communication skills using computing. Our challenge was to email our verse of the harvest poem to Miss Booden. We needed to create the document and then attach it in an email. This was something that some of us had not done before. See us working in the images below... how well we were focusing!

Can you think of a time we would need to attach something in an email?

Week beginning 10th October

Outdoor learning week

We have really been enjoying outdoor learning this week and have had many opportunities to apply our knowledge of shapes and their properties to our outside environment.

Our week started with a triangle challenge: How many triangles can you make from 9 sticks?  We all thought the answer would be 3 to start with and were surprised with how many we managed to make. One group even reached 14!

On Wednesday we looked at Andy Goldsworthy's famous artwork 'Iris leaves with Rowan berries'. We discussed the different polygons we could find within the picture. We then used natural resources to create our own versions- which shapes can you see?
Don't forget to visit the market place on Monday to see more photographs from this week.

Week beginning 3rd October

The First Two Days Of Year Five

On the first day back, we came into the new classroom either nervous or excited, then we sat at our new places. It was fabulous seeing all of our friends here and we have made a new friend! Owen.

We designed and made bookmarks and snails for our reading race (photos to follow).

In Fir class we have a new mascot... a monkey that needed a name. We shared possible names, then we voted for our favourite. "Nanas" won! (Jeff came second)!

On the second day back at school, we wrote a letter to our future self. In the letter we wrote our goals, hopes and dreams. We finished it with words of wisdom!

When we were playing Fizz Buzz, "Fizz Buzz" nearly died (due to a split seam), but Ms Hyner saved him with some careful stitching.

Friday afternoon is art! Yay!
