Autumn 2

Week 7: 15.12.25.

This week, the children have fully embraced the festive spirit! They enjoyed attending the Year 1 Nativity, where they were wonderfully supportive of the singing—well done to the confident narrators too. On Tuesday, the Christmas disco was a real highlight and lots of fun for everyone.

In English, the children completed their setting descriptions inspired by Whitby Abbey, linking beautifully to our work on Dracula. We were very impressed with the atmosphere and detail they included in their writing.

We would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for your continued support—we look forward to seeing everyone in the new term! 🎄✨

Week 6 8.12.25

In English this week we have written our first drafts of our setting descriptions for Whitby Abbey. Following our plans created at the beginning of the week, we have taken our time to expand our ideas and have tried hard to create a Gothic, suspenseful description filled with spooky vocabulary. Next week, we will edit and publish our work.

In Maths, Year 6 have been working incredibly hard on short and long division - which has really been testing our times table knowledge! In Year 5, we have continued our work on fractions and have been adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator.

During topic lessons, we have been exploring cause and consequence in History and have thought about crime and punishment in the Georgian era. We were able to link this learning to our work on The Highwayman, which we all really enjoyed.

We have also been thinking about self-care for our mental health in PHSE and designed our own match box, filled with ideas to help us with our own self-care. Please see the link below for the video which inspired our finger-print self care designs.

Week 5: 1.12.25.

What a fantastic and busy week we’ve had in Year 5/6! The children have continued to build their skills in preparation for writing their own atmospheric setting descriptions of Whitby Abbey. They have been exploring vocabulary, sentence structures and figurative language to help them bring this haunting location to life on the page. We can’t wait to see their final pieces!

In Art, the children showed great creativity as they produced striking images layered over busy, textured backgrounds. They experimented with contrast, colour and composition to make their focal images really stand out — the results are incredibly eye-catching!

We were also lucky enough to take part in a recycling and food-waste workshop, where the children learned about what really happens to the things we throw away and why reducing waste matters. They asked thoughtful questions and showed a genuine interest in how small changes can help our planet.

To finish the session, the children rolled up their sleeves and created their very own bubble and squeak balls using leftover ingredients that are commonly discarded after a Christmas dinner. It was brilliant to see them applying their new knowledge, working together and discovering how delicious food-waste recipes can be!

Well done Year 5/6 — a week full of creativity, curiosity and fantastic learning. We’re very proud of you!

Week 4: 24.11.25

This week, the children have been exploring the fascinating theme of change and continuity in crime and punishment during the Tudor period. We began by studying a range of Tudor crime profiles, carefully considering each person’s actions before deciding on the most appropriate historical punishment. The children showed brilliant reasoning skills as they justified their decisions and linked them to what they have learned about Tudor society.

In our next lesson, the classroom transformed into a lively Tudor courtroom. The children stepped into role as judges, villagers, guards and accused criminals, using drama to bring each case to life. Their performances were thoughtful, creative and full of energy, helping them deepen their understanding of how justice worked in the past. A fantastic week of historical thinking and immersive learning!

Week 3: 17.11.25

This week has been a lovely mix of reading, creativity and hands-on learning. Our class really enjoyed visiting Year 1 and Year 2 to share stories — they read to the younger children, listened carefully in return, and showed brilliant care and patience throughout.

In History, the children have been retrieving their prior knowledge as they explored the events leading up to the signing of the Magna Carta. In English, they have been working hard to use their new writing skills to create diary entries from Bess’s point of view in The Highwayman.

In PE, due to the wild weather we experienced on Wednesday the children had to do indoor PE. This was met with secret cheers, as the children love taking part in benchball.

Both year groups have also continued their fractions learning in maths, tackling new challenges with growing confidence. Also, our girls' Tag rugby team took part in a festival at Ely rugby club. They were a credit to the school and earned a medal each for their excellent effort and attitude.

Finally, the classroom has been full of excitement as the children have started assembling their Luna vehicles, adding the electrical components and seeing their designs come to life.

Week 2: 10.11.25

This week has been an exciting one!
Our Year 5 and 6 girls’ football team took part in a festival at Witchford College — their first ever competitive experience. They showed fantastic determination and teamwork, winning 2 out of their 8 games. We are incredibly proud of them!

The children took part in a 2 minute silence to show our appreciation for people that have lost their lives in wars.

In English, the children have been thoroughly enjoying writing descriptive passages inspired by The Highwayman, showing great creativity and imagination.

In DT, we are putting the finishing touches on our Mars Rovers. This week, the focus was on the circuit process, and the pupils showed brilliant problem-solving skills.

Year 6 have continued to deepen their understanding of fractions in Maths, tackling challenging concepts with confidence.

In History, we explored crime and punishment in Anglo-Saxon times, comparing past systems with those we know today.

Well done, everyone, for another fantastic week of learning!

Week 1: 3.11.25

What a fantastic week it has been in Upper Key Stage 2!

The children enjoyed taking part in a golf workshop led by a PGA professional – a brilliant chance to learn new skills and experience a different sport. They also competed in a football match against Kingsfield this week and came away with a well-deserved win – we are extremely proud of their teamwork, determination and sportsmanship.

As part of our learning around Remembrance, the children have created some truly stunning artwork which is now displayed on our classroom windows. The poppy designs look incredible from inside and outside the classroom.

Finally, the children have begun to take on their new Ambassador roles around school. They have shown great maturity and responsibility already – we are looking forward to seeing them grow into their new positions over the coming weeks.

Well done Year 5 and 6 – a brilliant week all round!
