Year 1:
This week we finished our story Monkey Puzzle and wrapped up our unit on lists, labels and captions. The children loved exploring the story and discovering how descriptive words can make their writing even more exciting. They are already looking forward to beginning their next English focus next week!
In maths, we began learning all about 3D shapes! The children learned six amazing new shape names — cylinder, cone, sphere, pyramid, cube and cuboid — and explored what each one looks like. We had great fun sorting the shapes in different ways, such as by colour and by type. Take a look at our photos to see the fantastic results of our sorting activities!
Our science learning took us outdoors as we talked all about sunrise and sunset, with a particular focus on how these occur during the autumn term. We were very lucky to capture a stunning sunrise right here on Manea’s playground, snapped perfectly by Miss Hills.
On Friday, we enjoyed our very own Woodland Day! The children took part in a range of exciting activities and even took a magical trip down to the woods. We pretended to be Little Red Riding Hood on our way to visit Grandma — a wonderful moment of imagination and storytelling brought to life.
Well done, Year 1, for such a fantastic and hardworking week!
Year 2
This week in English we have continued thinking about our non-chronological report. We have decided which woodland creature we would like to write about and have been collecting facts about these animals.
In maths, we have again been adding and subtracting. We have been working hard to spot when we need to exchange and have been completing word problems.
This week in computing, we have been exploring different parts of a computer or laptop. We have been learning about how to use the mousepad and how to double click.
In DT we designed our traps for the wolf from Little Red Riding Hood. We had a design brief to explain what we needed to do and knew that it needed to be a free-standing structure. We then drew our designs and labelled them with the materials and resources that we would like to use.
Since last Tuesday, we have been measuring the amount of rain that we have collected from our rain gauge. We have worked out when we have had the most and least amount of rain.
Friday was our Woodland Day. We started the morning with a walk to the woods and thought about our DT project - where to find a wolf and where would be best to place a trap. Later, we completed our PE based on Little Red Riding Hood and had a go at drawing Little Red. In the afternoon we completed drawing club based on Little Red Riding Hood and decorated biscuits that Little Red could have taken to Grandma.
