Year 1:
This week in English, we have begun exploring poetry. The children have been learning to identify rhyming words and have enjoyed spotting patterns in different poems. They were very excited to create some of their own rhyming poems too — please take a look at their fantastic work! We are looking forward to continuing our poetry learning next week and can’t wait to listen to and explore some animal-themed poems.
In Maths, we have been focusing on numbers from 20 to 50. The children have been working hard to recognise and order these numbers. We have also been creating groups of ten using our key numbers: 20, 30, 40 and 50. Later in the week, we practised partitioning numbers between 20 and 50, identifying how many tens and how many ones each number has.
In DT we explored wheels and axles. The children had lots of fun investigating different products and evaluating how effective they were. We even tested vehicles to see which one travelled the furthest across the carpet when given a push!
In Science we were identifying different objects that are alive, dead and never alive. We had lots of fun exploring in our outside area finding some objects to group.
It has been a wonderful week of learning in Year 1, and we are very proud of all the children’s hard work.
Year 2
This week in English we started to learn about instructions. We have been using the book The Storm Whale as a basis for our work and next week we will begin writing our own instruction about how to look after a Storm Whale. We have been learning about rhetorical questions and modifying nouns and will use this in our work next week.
In maths, we have started a unit on measure – focussing on length and height. We have been exploring measuring the length and height of items in the classroom and even measured the length of the playground! We have also been comparing and ordering lengths.
This week in RE we started learning about Sikhism. We thought about what we already knew about the religion and also any questions that we can ask to find out more. We began learning about a key figure in Sikhism; Guru Nanak.
In science we have continued our learning about animals including humans. This week we thought about a healthy diet and learnt all about the five food groups. We created our own idea of a healthy, balanced meal.
In PSHE, we started thinking about our unit focussing on Drug Education. We thought about how different substances, such as food, water and medicines can get into our bodies.
In DT, we began looking at wheeled products. We identified the wheels, axles and chassis. This learning is going to help us over the next few weeks as we design and make our own wheeled vehicles.
We started our computing unit this week too; learning how to programme a robot. We explored using the Beebots, how they move and what the buttons on them mean.
