We have had a wonderful first week back in Year 1 and it has been lovely to see all of the children’s smiling faces as we welcomed in 2026 together. The children have settled back into routines brilliantly and shown great enthusiasm across all areas of learning.
In English, we revisited our full independent clause sentence structure. The children practised identifying the subject and the verb, ensuring sentences were correctly punctuated with a capital letter and a full stop. We then began extending our sentences by adding “leftovers” to give more information and make our writing more interesting.
In Maths, we quickly refreshed our knowledge of numbers 1–10 before moving on to focus on numbers 0–20. The children enjoyed exploring what these numbers look like and the different ways they can be made, showing great engagement through hands-on activities.
In Topic, we began applying our retrieval skills from our learning about Animals Including Humans. We discussed the basic needs of humans and explored what essential items we would need if we were going on a backpacking journey.
In RE, we started our new learning about Hinduism. The children were introduced to the Puja tray, learning about the different items it contains and their importance. They were fascinated by the many interesting facts they discovered.
Year 2
This week in English, we started our new unit. We will be creating our own Wanted Posters! We used the story of Hermelin the Detective Mouse as our starting point and asked questions about what could be seen in the story. We have started thinking about adjectives and nouns and have used these to write expanded noun phrases to describe items.
In maths we have been learning about money. This week we have been identifying different coins and notes, finding totals and making the same amount in more than one way.
In RE, we started our new topic about Hinduism. We thought about what we already know about RE, different religions including Hinduism. We looked at different photographs to try to find out more.
In art, we started our new unit about simple printmaking. This week we used our fingers and hands to make prints.
In Science we thought about the season – Winter. We were lucky enough to do this on a snowy day! We thought about the weather in winter, how we stay warm and some of the activities and celebrations that take place in Winter. We also went on a Winter walk to have a look at the snow!
In PSHE, we shared some of things that we like to do. We learnt about a new word – stereotypes and how these can affect what people can want to play with.
In Music, we learnt a song all about football. We learnt the lyrics and began tapping along to the beat.
We started our Fitness unit in PE. We thought about how to run for a long time and had to make sure we paced ourselves and didn’t start off too quickly.
