WB: 1.12.25

This week in Year 1, we have been super busy and working incredibly hard!

In Maths, we finished our unit on 2D and 3D shapes. The children explored what different shapes look like and learned how to identify them by their features. They really enjoyed sorting and naming shapes and spotting them in groups.

In English, we continued to revisit our knowledge of common and proper nouns. We then began learning about the verbs to be’ and to have’. These were a little tricky at times, but the children showed great resilience and worked hard to remember all of the being verbs.

In Science, we headed outside for Scavenger Hunt Part 2! We compared the leaves we found this week with those from our first hunt. It was definitely much colder this time, and we only found one green leaf — a great observation of the seasonal changes happening around us!

In PSHE, we explored different emotions and feelings. The children had lots of fun acting out emotions for their friends to guess. We also read the lovely book Silly Billy, which helped us think about the feeling of being worried and how we can manage it.

Finally, the children have been very busy practising for our Nativity. With the performance just around the corner, we are all getting very excited!

Well done for another fantastic week, Year 1!

Year 2

This week in maths, we have started our shape unit. We have been naming both 2D and 3D shapes and have started identifying their properties. We have been counting the number of sides and vertices on 2D shapes and have been drawing them too, making sure we use a rule to draw the straight sides.

In English, we have been looking at recount letters. We have focussed our work on Little Red Riding Hood and next week we will be writing our letters to recount the events in the day that Little Red goes to visit Grandma.

This week in DT, we have been making our traps to catch the wolf. We have been using our plans to remind ourselves what the trap should look like and the materials that we wanted to use to create it. We have also used nets to create cubes and cuboids to be used in the traps.

In computing, we have continued our work using the Chrome Books. We have been logging on and using a paint programme to begin writing our names and creating pictures.

Our science work has again been about the seasons. We have been thinking about why the leaves on trees change colour and fall to the ground. We found out that due to the change in the weather, trees try to save energy. The tree forms a seal at the base of the leaf stem which makes it detach and fall.

In PSHE, we have been thinking about our emotions. We played a game to try and guess the emotion that someone was showing. We thought about facial expressions and body language. Can you work out what emotions the children are showing in the photos?

On Friday afternoon, Beech class had Forest School! The children had a fantastic time creating a life-size trap for the wolf in Little Red Riding Hood!
