Year 1:
In Writing, we continued exploring our setting description unit based on the Gingerbread House. We learnt about the coordinating conjunction “and” and how it can be used to join two similar independent clauses together. We discussed how the second clause often adds extra information about something mentioned in the first clause. We then moved on to identifying nouns and verbs within our setting descriptions and thinking carefully about how we could describe them in more detail before introducing cliffhangers into our writing. The children have produced some lovely work this week and should be very proud of themselves!
In Maths, we continued our learning on directions. We focused on positional and directional language including above and below, forwards and backwards, left and right, as well as different turns. The children had great fun taking part in practical activities to support their understanding.
In Topic, we continued learning about our community. We consolidated our understanding that communities include different places of worship and explored how there are many places of worship across the world.
In PSHE, we discussed how our likes and interests can change as we grow older, and that this is absolutely fine. We also talked about how these changes can sometimes make us feel a little sad and explored different strategies that can help us manage these feelings.
What another busy and fun week we have had in Year 1! Just one more week to go until I let everyone have a well-earned week off!
Year 2
In English this week, we continued thinking about diary entries. We thought about introductions and using exclamations in our work to express emotions. We then thought about how we can improve our work by adding adverbs of time and manner, using conjunctions and expanded noun phrases.
We continued our work on time this week in maths. We started off telling the time past the hour, before moving on to telling the time to the hour and to the nearest 5 minutes.
In art this week, we created our own sculptures again, this time inspired by Charles Darwin and the HMS Beagle. We used different materials and resources to try to fill holes and make a boat that would float!
In science, we investigated the ideal habitats for insects. First, we needed to collect some insects, ideally woodlice, but this wasn’t too easy! We created different areas for the woodlice; dry, damp, light and dark to see which conditions the woodlice preferred.
In RE, we thought about special religious places in the community. We thought about churches, mandirs and gurdwaras and what people do there.
Our PSHE lesson focussed on how we feel when things are lost or misplaced. We used the story of Dogger to discuss how people might feel and why.
