Year 1
In English, we began our new writing topic of recount letters. The children will be writing to Mrs Baker as the Gingerbread Man, recounting the chronological events he experienced after leaving her house to avoid being eaten! We have enjoyed identifying the verbs and subjects in fully punctuated sentences and recording these in tables. We have also continued practising our letter formation. To help us understand the style and structure of a recount letter, we used ChatGPT to create a letter from the Gingerbread Man to Mrs Baker, which the children thoroughly enjoyed.
In Maths, we have been working with numbers to 100, placing them on number lines and identifying which numbers are greater than or less than others. We then moved on to comparing numbers within 100 that have the same number of tens. The children especially enjoyed using the tables to record and share their learning.
In History, we began our exciting new topic on Hospitals and Healthcare. The children became historian detectives and investigated five pieces of photographic evidence. They first decided whether each photograph was from the past or present and explained their reasoning. We then carried out further research to discover what was happening in each image and what it could tell us about healthcare over time.
Well done, Year 1, on a brilliant first week back. Keep up the fantastic work!
Year 2
This week in English we started our new unit about Setting Descriptions. We learnt about and identified the features of setting descriptions; such as introductions, adverbials of place, expanded noun phrases and cliff-hanger endings. We then used adverbials of time to improve a piece of writing and conjunctions to join independent clauses together that we could use in our introductions.
In maths this week we started our unit on statistics. We have looked at tally charts, tables, block diagrams and pictograms. We have collected our own data, recorded it on the charts, tables and diagrams and have been answering questions about what the data shows us.
This week, we started practising our performance. We created our script together to share our favourite parts of Year 2. Remember to come along and watch it in a few weeks!
This week has been Science Week! We have been thinking about the climate alongside our topic of living things and their habitats. We have been looking at food chains and understanding how energy is passed from thing to another. We have been using key words such as prey and predator. We all enjoyed building nests and sharing this with the parents that came to see our science work.
