Year 1
In Maths, we began by consolidating our counting in 2s and 10s before being introduced to counting in 5s. We discovered that numbers in the 5 sequence always end in a 5 or a 0 and enjoyed spotting the pattern this creates on a number grid. We also had lots of fun outside, drawing around our hands on the playground to help us practise counting in 10s in a practical and engaging way.
In Writing, we started our new topic on character description. We are working towards creating a wanted poster for the Gingerbread Man! We began by reading the story and exploring how we can describe his appearance and personality. Later in the week, our classroom turned into a crime scene when we discovered a wanted poster for a Big Bad Wolf last seen in the deep, dark woods! We used our prior knowledge from last term—when we wrote instructions on how to trap the wolf—to help us describe him to the police. We had great fun and gave such detailed descriptions that we hope the police will catch him soon!
In RE, we began learning about communities—what they are and who belongs to them. We enjoyed discussing how we are all part of Cherry Class and the Year 1 community, and we are excited to explore this topic further in the coming weeks.
In Geography, we located the four countries that make up the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. We also began learning their capital cities, which really made our brains work hard!
Year 2
This week in English we have started exploring poetry. We began by looking at calligrams (shape poems). We thought about why certain shapes were used and why the poet chose them and the title. We started off identifying features in the calligrams and found some poems with rhyming words and some without. We then moved on to learning about similes and wrote some of our own about the colours in the rainbow.
In maths we have been learning about fractions. We have been thinking about parts and wholes and equal and unequal groups. We know that fractions need to be equal. We then learnt more about halves and have been finding half of a shape and quantity and have then moved on to quarters.
In art this week, we started our new unit on sculpture. We looked at sculptures that had already been created and focussed on our favourite part of them.
In Science, we began our living things and their habitats unit. We created a spider diagram about all the things we already know and even had a go at a quiz!
This week in RE, we started thinking about our community. We had a recap of people that are in our community and thought about different roles.
In PSHE, we began thinking about changes. We identified some things that we can do now that we couldn’t do when we were babies.
