Year 1
This week, we were very excited to welcome researchers from Cambridge University to Cherry Class! To begin the week, we worked individually with the adults, completing a range of language and reading activities. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to share our ideas and show off our fantastic learning.
On Tuesday, we worked together as a whole class to complete lots of fun and exciting activities linked to our five senses.
We began by drawing around our body template of Ronnie. We were given five images representing our senses and had to think carefully about where each sense can be found on the human body. We then placed the images in the correct positions.
Next, we put our listening skills to the test! We played a game on the iPad where we had to listen carefully for a beep. Every time we heard the sound, we had to quickly press the screen to help Sandy the dolphin receive a new shell for her cave. We had to concentrate carefully and listen closely!
Later in the day, we took part in a variety of activities linked to all five of our senses. It was a fantastic day of learning, exploring and discovering. We were all incredibly proud to receive our certificates at the end of the session!
In our writing lessons, we have continued to develop our understanding of labels. This week, we practised adding labels to a picture of Captain America, carefully thinking about the different features we could identify.
Next week, we will begin exploring the third and final book in our Traction Man series. We are very excited to find out what adventures await us!
Our Art lesson this week took us outside! We headed onto the field to find a natural resource that we wanted to bring back into the classroom and use as inspiration for our artwork.
As a special treat, we were joined by the Year 3 children, who were completing a similar activity in their Art lesson. It was wonderful to see the two year groups working together. The Year 3 children were fantastic role models and team leaders for Cherry Class, helping and encouraging us throughout the lesson.
It was lovely to see everyone enjoying their creativity together and sharing ideas across the year groups.
This week, Year 2 have been working incredibly hard and have enjoyed lots of exciting learning across the curriculum!
In Maths, we have been developing our understanding of more and less, as well as identifying the greatest and smallest numbers. We have been practising using the mathematical symbols <, > and = to compare numbers and show our thinking within our work. The children have worked hard to explain their reasoning and have become more confident when comparing numbers.
In English, we began our new unit, Place of Punctuation and Grammar (POPG). This week, we have been focusing on nouns, learning the difference between common nouns and proper nouns. The children have enjoyed identifying these within sentences and texts and have been practising spotting them in their own reading and writing.
In Science, we have been learning about the properties of rocks and stones. The children applied their knowledge in a fun design challenge linked to The Three Little Pigs. We imagined that the Three Little Pigs had cousins who also needed protection from the Big Bad Wolf! Using what we had learnt about different materials, we designed houses for the cousins and carefully labelled our designs to explain which materials we would use for each feature and why. The children showed great creativity and scientific thinking when choosing materials that would make their houses strong and safe.
In History, we began exploring the differences between the toys we play with today and the toys that our parents had when they were younger. The children thoroughly enjoyed looking at the photographs that were sent in and discussing how toys have changed over time. If you have not yet sent in a photograph, there is still time to do so, as we will be continuing this learning and exploring the topic in more detail next week.
In PE, we have been working hard during our teamwork unit. It has been fantastic to see the progress the children are making in their ability to communicate effectively, listen carefully to one another and work together to achieve a shared goal. Their confidence and cooperation continue to grow each week.
In Art, we have been developing our drawing skills by exploring different shading techniques. The children have been creating drawings of natural resources and experimenting with ways to add tone, texture and detail to their artwork through careful shading.
We are incredibly proud of all the hard work, enthusiasm and positive attitudes the children have shown this week. We look forward to another exciting week of learning and discovery next week!
