Year 1:
What a fantastic first full, proper week back we have had in Year 1! The children have settled back into our routines brilliantly and have worked incredibly hard across all areas of their learning. Here is a little look at what we have been getting up to this week.
In Maths, the children have continued to sort and represent objects to 10. We had lots of fun taking our learning outside on Monday morning, working with a partner to sort and represent different objects. Please take a look at our photos to see us in action!
We then moved on to beginning to recognise numbers to 10 as words. Some of these number words are particularly tricky to remember — especially one! The children have shown great perseverance as they have begun to become more familiar with them.
Towards the end of the week, we have been practising counting on from any number within 10 and learning how to find 1 more than any given number within 10. We have also worked hard to practise our number formation to 10, making sure that our numbers are formed correctly.
In Writing, we have begun creating labels and lists. linked to our focus text, Traction Man. We had lots of fun looking closely at Traction Man and thinking about what he wears and what he looks like, noticing lots of interesting details.
Next week, we will move on to the next book in the Traction Man series, where we will continue developing our skills by creating more lists and labels.
Our Art lesson on Thursday was lots of fun! We explored our local environment and used natural resources to create interesting patterns. We got creative with the different materials available to us and thought carefully about the patterns we wanted to make.
The children were also able to explain why they had created their patterns in particular ways, showing some fantastic thinking and creativity.
On Monday morning, the children had their first Music lesson and really enjoyed getting involved! They practised echoing actions to a beat and began learning the melody to their new song.
They had lots of fun joining in and are already looking forward to continuing to learn and develop the song in their future music lessons.
It has been a wonderful first full week back, and we are so proud of how hard the children have worked. They have shown such enthusiasm, creativity and perseverance in their learning and have made a fantastic start to the new term.
What another fantastic week we have had in Year 2!
In English, we have made a great start to our new topic, Lists, Labels and Captions. The children have enjoyed adding their own labels to pictures and creating lists for a range of purposes. We have been impressed by their enthusiasm and growing confidence with their writing.
In Maths, we have been exploring different ways to partition 2-digit numbers. The children have been exchanging a group of ten for 10 ones and using practical resources to support their understanding. They particularly enjoyed this hands-on learning and showed excellent mathematical thinking.
Our first Science lesson was a huge success! We became material detectives and searched around the classroom for objects made from different everyday materials. The children were fascinated to discover that many objects are made from more than one material. For example, a door can be made from both wood and glass.
History was definitely a class favourite this week. The children brought in a special toy from home and took turns sharing it with their classmates. We discussed similarities and differences between the toys and thought carefully about how toys have changed over time. The children recognised that today there is a huge variety of toys to choose from, whereas children in the past often had far fewer options.
In Art, we continued learning about the artist Andy Goldsworthy. We went on a nature hunt around the school grounds to collect natural materials and then used these treasures to create our own artwork inspired by his work. The children loved being creative outdoors and working with natural resources.
We are so proud of how well the children have settled into Year 2 and look forward to another exciting week of learning ahead!
