Year 1:
This week, we began exploring part-part-whole models, and the children loved getting creative with their mathematical thinking! Using teddy bears, they designed their own part-part-whole models to make 10, identifying the two parts and the whole they had created.
Later in the week, we moved on to writing our own addition sentences and exploring fact families. Using 10 circles and two different coloured pencils, the children decided how many circles to colour in each colour. For example, they might colour 6 circles red and 4 circles green. From this, we learnt that 6 + 4 = 10, but we also discovered that 4 + 6 = 10! The children did a brilliant job of recognising how we can use the same numbers in different ways to make the same total.
In History, we became toy detectives! We were given a selection of photographs of toys from different periods and worked together as a class to decide which toys we thought were the oldest and which were the newest. Take a look at our final decision! We had great fun comparing the similarities and differences between toys from the past and those we play with today.
Our classroom was transformed into an art gallery this week! The children had the opportunity to explore and admire their peers' artwork, taking time to appreciate everyone's creations. It was wonderful to hear so many kind and thoughtful comments as the children shared what they liked about each other's work.
We have also continued working incredibly hard on practising our Harvest songs. We can't wait to share them with you all!
Well done, Year 1, for another wonderful week of learning, creativity and teamwork. We are so proud of you all!
Year 2:
This week in English, we have been learning what a sentence needs to make sense by identifying the subject and the verb. We also explored the difference between single-clause sentences and independent clauses. The children thoroughly enjoyed creating their own sentences and then highlighting the subject and verb within them.
In Maths, we have been using our knowledge of number bonds to 10 to help us learn number bonds to 100 and develop strategies for adding by making 100. The children have shown great confidence when applying their existing knowledge to larger numbers.
Our Science learning focused on the properties of metal and identifying everyday objects that are made from metal. The children particularly enjoyed going on a metal hunt around the school, discovering just how many items contain this useful material!
Within Music, we have continued practising our songs for the upcoming Harvest Assembly. The children have been singing beautifully and are looking forward to performing for you.
In Art, the children carefully observed and drew plants before using watercolours to add colour and detail to their work. We have been incredibly impressed by the creativity, care and talent shown in their finished pieces. Their artwork looks fantastic!
In PE, we have been focusing on jumping skills and were introduced to the patterns used in French skipping. In our team-building unit, the children worked together to collect bean bags and create their own emoji faces. They showed fantastic teamwork and creativity, producing a range of emojis including happy, sad, angry, worried, shocked and upset faces. This was a very popular activity and lots of fun was had by all!
Well done, everyone, for another fantastic week of learning.
