What a busy and exciting week we’ve had in Year 1!
In English, we continued developing our instructional writing. This week, we focused on writing clear commands and ensuring our instructions are written in the correct chronological order so they make sense to the reader. We discussed how important it is not to mix up steps—after all, we can’t trap the wolf before we’ve even set the trap! The children came up with some fantastic ideas and used lovely adjectives to make their instructions more engaging. I’m really looking forward to seeing their finished pieces next week—and I know the children are too!
In Maths, we wrapped up our measurement unit. The children had great fun exploring capacity, measuring different containers and using key vocabulary to describe volume. Towards the end of the week, we also spent time consolidating our understanding of numbers to 50 through a range of engaging activities.
In DT, we reached the end of our wheels and axles unit by designing and creating our very own moving vehicles. The children thoroughly enjoyed this hands-on activity, carefully following the success criteria while adding their own creative touches—especially choosing their favourite colours!
What a fantastic week it has been—well done, Year 1! Just four more days to go before a very well-deserved two-week break.
Year 2
This week in English we started a new unit; character descriptions. We have looked at examples of character descriptions to identify different features, such as being written in third person, present tense words and expanded noun phrases. We have been using the story The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch to create ideas about Mr Grinling’s appearance and personality and next week we will put our character description together.
In maths this week, we have been working incredibly hard to complete our assessments. We have been using our knowledge of addition and subtraction as well as multiplication and division to solve arithmetic questions. We have also been using what we have learnt so far in all units to complete some reasoning problems.
This week in RE, we have been thinking about Sikh ceremonies. We have learnt about Naam Karan; the naming ceremony and Dastar Bandi; the turban tying ceremony. These events both take place in the Gurdwara.
In science this week, we revisited our shadow lesson from earlier in the year. We went outside at different times throughout the day to see how our shadows changed based on where the sun was. When there were lots of clouds in the sky, it was much trickier to see our shadows clearly.
Our PSHE lesson this week focussed on warning symbols that can be found on packaging for different items. This followed on from our learning last week where we thought about safe storage for medicines. We learnt that some substances can be harmful to the environment, whilst others can be an irritant and make your skin very itchy.
We have been very busy in DT this week creating our wheeled vehicles. We had to think about how we could use our boxes as a chassis and then attach our dowel axles and wheels. Have a look at the photos to see how we have got on!
Today (Friday) we completed our Red Nose Day Challenges! We had to flip a coin and shout heads or tails and see how many times we could guess correctly. We also used balloons to play keepy-uppy to see which group could keep their balloon in the air for the longest time!
